Otters Blog – 19.1.18

This week we had a special delivery.  It was a box with a penguin inside.  We were curious to know why it was here and where it had come from.  We still are yet to find out.  We have used the i-pads to share information to make our penguin speak.  We used an app called Chatterpix Kids to do this. Working collaboratively we produced some very funny and amazing videos.  We have been creative and collaborative when we put together a dance routine. Also we have learnt a new story called Lost and Found.  We have followed a story map and used actions to tell it.  Come and see the photographs of new actions we have made up ourselves.   We listened to very peaceful and relaxing music about the rainforest.  We thought of words to describe how we felt when we listened to it.  In maths, we have been resourceful using number lines and our knowledge of partitioning to help us add and solve word problems.  This week we were curious to find out about the rainforest, deserts and polar regions.  We learnt about animals, plants and climate there. Our topic books are now filled with many pictures showing these places. We have been reflective thinking about what we have learnt and also editing and improving our work to make it better. We also elected two new Class Council Reps.  Well done to Kara-Mae and Thomas.

My favourite has been using Chatterpix Kids (Harry, Scarlett))My favourite has been listening to the music. I liked The Lion Sleeps Tonight (Kara-Mae)My favourite was drawing, colouring and labelling the Sahara Desert and the Polar regions.(Charlie H)My favourite was using number lines to help us add (Eden H)

Otters Blog – 9.2.18

This week we have shown all of our Tree for Good Learning qualities in planning our text map for our writing today.  We were collaborative in coming up with ideas to describe a rainforest scene as a class, Then we were resourceful in using those ideas in writing our own phrases and short descriptive sentences. We were very creative in our ideas and curious in finding out about different rainforest animals and plants.  We then had to edit our own work making us reflective and resilient.

In science we were again curious as we tested different materials to see if they were waterproof or not.  We poured water on to them, using pipettes.   We discovered that tin foil is waterproof and that our socks are not!

We have been doing maths quizzes this week which have been rather hard work, and we have been very resilient, so we are ready for our half term holidays.  We have also been practising our times tables.

In PE we have again been creative learning our Penguin Dance with Mrs Ash, using our own ideas.  On Tuesday we did some Internet Safety work, as it is Internet Safety week.  We looked at the story Chicken Clicking and had lots of discussion about how we stay safe when using the internet.  We are sure that all of us have come home and discussed internet safety at home.

This week we have been resilient learning our 5 times tables and practising our 10s times tables.  We have been solving maths problems by using arrays where we have to be careful to make sure we have the right number of dots in our columns.

In English we have started writing a description of a setting from part of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.  We have been very creative in our use of different words.  We described the setting using adjectives, verbs and prepositions.  We have written some amazing sentences.

In our topic work we have been resourceful in finding out about Captain Scott and his adventure to the South Pole.  He wanted to be the first person to the South Pole but was unfortunately beaten to it by Roald Amundsen.

On Wednesday we were curious and investigated whether blubber keeps you warm in cold water by putting lard in a bag and then putting our hands in it and plunging them into a bowl of ice.  We decided that it does help protect you from the cold.

In our Art lesson we sketched polar bears with chalks and charcoal and also sketched a background to make a lovely picture for a display.

This week in challenge time we have been creative. We drew designs of our junk model and then we created them using the junk that we brought in from home. (Pixie)

Lenny has shown resilience during writing this week. He had to think about how he could use the phrases he had thought of on Thursday in his writing today.

Harry C believes we have been curious learners this week when we were learning about the word camouflage. We looked at images with animals in them and we had to try to spot them.

Codey thinks we have all been resilient writers this week because we had think carefully about what we were including in our descriptions of a setting.

We have also been learning about bar charts and tally charts this week in Maths. We asked each other what our favourite animal in the rainforest would be and created a tally chart. We then used this data to create a bar chart.

We have also been practising our times tables using an app on the ipads!

This week we have been very busy again. Mrs Buckley has worked us very hard.  Lucie has enjoyed practising her times tables. We have all been resilient and continued to practise these.  We now feel that we know our ten times table much better. Next week we will be learning our 5 xtable.  In PE Amber liked walking like a penguin and travelling in different ways.  We worked collaboratively to make our dance better. Harry enjoyed drawing his block graph.  We had to take data from a tally chart and put it into a block graph. See our display in the classroom. Ben enjoyed golden time, drawing himself in chalk, catching snowflakes on his tongue.  We were creative when we did this.  In challenge time, Albie enjoyed making penguins.  We were creative in this too.  We have also written some amazing descriptions of a setting for the South Pole.  We were all prasied and felt very proud of our work. Alyssa said the music was fun this week when we listened to rainforest music and sounds. We also looked at a picture and had to imagine what it was like to be there and how we would feel.

We were all curious on Monday when a parcel arrived in Otter’s classroom and white footprints were beside it. We guess what was going to be inside the package.

Lenny was creative when he drew his pictures to show what lives in the Rainforest, desert and in the Polar Regions. We have been reflective and resilient because we had to go back to our work and remember what animals live in the different layers of the rainforest.

Mia was collaborative when she worked with Elsie, Olivia and Lenny during challenge time. They made hummingbirds using multi-link and began to create a scene.

Abigail thinks the whole class has been collaborative this week. We showed this when we learnt our new story plan called ‘Lost and Found’ we thought of different actions together.

Codey has shown curiosity this week in guided reading, he has found out how snakes eat their food. He discovered they eat them whole!

We have been learning to write questions this week. Olivia believes we have been curious because we asked the little boy from Lost and Found questions.

Elsie thinks we have been reflective when we were planning our acrostic poem. We thought of ideas in a thought bubble and then planned an acrostic poem. Lexi thinks we also showed resilience when we were thinking of our ideas.

In our challenge time we have shown we were creative when we made paper snow globes. (Harry C)

Abigail believes we were resilient in dance this week because we had to keep practising different dance moves to look like a penguin.

We have also shown we are curious learners because we used a Thesaurus to look up different words that have the same meaning.

Lenny showed he was curious in the snowman Maths challenge. Lenny had to work out how many arms 6 snowmen would have altogether?

We were resourceful in Geography because we had to use an Atlas to help us find continents and the oceans of the world.
