What is a Pupil Parliament?
A Pupil Parliament provides an opportunity for students to be involved in school governance and decision making through a group of democratically elected students who represent the views of all students at the school.
Why have a Pupil Parliament?
A pupil parliament promotes pupil leadership opportunities and it enables children to develop valuable communication, organisation and debating skills. It allows pupils from all year groups to be actively involved in the way that the school is run. Pupils relish the opportunity to become a greater part of school life and enjoy making their voices heard.
What are the aims of the Pupil Parliament?
- Represent all pupils and include as many pupils as possible.
- Take time to listen to all pupils and communicate their views.
- Feedback to pupils about what happened about their views.
- Action decisions that have been made or explain why they can’t happen.
Who is part of the Pupil Parliament?
At the start of each school year we will hold elections for our Pupil Parliament. Our Pupil Parliament has a ‘School Cabinet’ with a Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, Treasurer and Secretary. These positions will stay the same all year, once they have been voted for. In addition to these four roles there will be 2 Members of Parliament from each class. These will be voted for once a term and will change each term.
Who can be a Member of Parliament?
Any pupil can become a Member of Parliament. Each candidate will need to give a short speech to the rest of their class explaining why they want the role and then a class election is held.
What does the Pupil Parliament do?
The School Cabinet and MPs will work together on their chosen projects, lead meetings with their own classes and discuss challenges and resolutions with different members of staff. This is to ensure that the views of the school are listened to, debated and acted upon so that Pupil Parliament gets the best outcome for every project.
Every fortnight there will be a full Pupil Parliament meeting.
